Un-embedding an Excel object from Powerpoint

Sometimes you get a Powerpoint deck featuring graphs and tables inserted via embedding an excel workbook. Of course, this is pretty stupid as the recipient of the deck can then view the source excel file and this might get the sender in trouble… If, however, you are the recipient and could benefit from the embedded excel workbook, here is how to liberate it:

  • Double click on the embedded workbook/worksheet.
  • Right click on a tab and “view code”.
  • Type ctrl-G to see the immediate window.
  • Enter this command: activeworkbook.saveas "C:\enter_output_name here.xls"

This works in Windows. Haven’t tried it on the mac. YMMV
